Artwork for The Softwire's Rings of Orbis
PJ Haarsma
After I saw the number of items I would have to create for the Rings of Orbis I knew I couldn't afford it. Therefore I decided to do them myself. I took a course for a computer program called Zbrush. Four months later I began pumping out the items you can collect in the game. Every item I create is inspired from something in my story.

I knew what I wanted to make but I needed to understand how to mold that idea from a sphere or a square. Once I understand the interface, Zbrush became an incredibly powerful tool.

With this item I wanted to create an illegal F.O.R.M. band that Citizens strapped on their knudniks in order to feed them. I started with a torus to form the basic shape.

What's great about Zbrush is the amount of detail you can put into a polymesh. In the beginning I went crazy inscribing little alien symbols and letters on everything but the items are only 80x80 pixels. Unfortunately most of that detail was not visible in the final render.

So far I have created almost a thousand of these 3D items for the Rings of Orbis.

Once I got the hang of Zbrush I tackled the game's interface. I started putting 2D illustrations from Zbrush everywhere.

I even created the practice robots for Quest Nest, the part of the game where you can battle other players. Here is an example of the robot as an avatar in the message board. I have to admit I was doing so much of this stuff that it was hard to get back to the writing.
