Artwork for The Softwire's Rings of Orbis
Stephan Martiniere
Stephan is an amazing artist who's credits include Star Wars, I Robot, Titan AE and a zillion other high profile projects. After reading an early draft of The Softwire, Stephan offered to create the Citizens, Keepers and Neewalkers you see on the cover of the book and the website.

I would send Stephan notes about each character and passages from the book that highlighted details I felt were important. Stephan would then send me several sketches for the first stage. With the Trefaldoors I was very concerned with the size of the head in proportion to its body. Even more so I wanted the extra-cranial storage devices of these aliens to be just right. I love the Trefaldoors and I have volumes of back story on this race.
Next Stephan would send me a full body sketch of the one I liked the most. In this example I wanted some sort of clothing or armor on the Trefaldoor. Clothes are always an issue with the aliens because without them I feel the aliens lack a "civilized" look. Texture and coloring were also discussed as well as the pose. Stephan did an awesome job of illustrating the size of a Trefaldoor while still letting him appear mobile.

Here's the final color image. Every alien had this much detail and more. We did some small adjustments for the shine on the skin and the results were just perfect.

From start to finish the process took about two weeks and Stephan has created six aliens for me so far. It's great working with Stephan. He's very professional and the work speaks for itself.
